James 4:8 Illustrated Print
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” — James 4:8 NKJV
This is a verse we often hear, but many of us don’t realise that to truly draw near to God, it starts with clean hands and pure hearts. We cannot draw near to God if we choose to remain in sin — whether it’s pride, unforgiveness, selfishness, greed, fear, or anything else we hold on to.
A pure heart doesn’t begin with Bible knowledge or knowing all the right things — it begins with turning away from sin in our lives. To draw near to God is to understand that He is holy and pure, and that sin is still sin. We turn away from it not out of religion, but because we want more of Him (relationship, that’s why it says DRAW CLOSE, because it’s all about relationship).
It’s not about being religious or trying to “clean yourself up” to earn approval or strive. It’s about having the right attitude of heart when approaching a Holy and Righteous God.
Yes, God is our loving Father, but we must also remember that He is Holy, Just, and Righteous. He cannot come close to sin. Not because He doesn’t want to come close to us, but because He is Holy.
So let’s choose to set ourselves apart. Let’s be a holy people, a people who seek after God more than our own desires or self-seeking ways. Let’s live set apart and BE holy, because of who He is. Let’s draw near to Him… and even closer still. 🤍
